Jean-Paul Vroom Biography

Jean-Paul Vroom was a man who was famous for his photography and lithography. He was born in The Hague. Later in life he would become famous in the theatre world for his works. You could say he was groomed to take on this type of his career. His father was a painter and set designer in Holland while his mother was a woman who ran a fashion house. He began his studies at the Royal Academy. He left for Paris when he was just 16 years old and became an engraver. He continued to do engravings and etchings for several years after this. During this time, he also worked on lithographs and screen prints. He also started to put on his own exhibitions all across the globe including locations like Germany, Amsterdam, the United States, and Paris.

In 1952, he really began his extensive career in theatre when he designed the costumes and sets along with Roger Blin for a production of the popular play “Waiting for Godot”.  He would become incredibly interested in photography during the 1960s. He would take his love of photography and move into working as an art director for films. Most recently, he started a strong working relationship with a choreographer by the name of Hans van Manen. They collaborated together and Vroom would make designs for a lot of his ballets.

About “Jail the First Stone”

One of his most known works is probably his work “Jail the First Stone”. This psychedelic rock poster also goes by the full name “Let Him That is Without Sin Jail the First Stone”. You may recognize the face on this poster as the leader singer of the very famous rock band The Rolling Stones. Originally created in the year 1967 at the beginning of this band’s popularity, this lithograph was printed in black, red, and green and was an incredibly iconic piece for its time. It was created in Holland and was a really good example of exactly how talented this artist was. This was a great photograph that was taken and turned into an even more incredible piece of work.
